The Fab Lab Iași Association announces the launch of a first-of-its-kind initiative for the region of Moldova. Fab Mobile is a mobile educational laboratory designed to make students friendly with technology, in the most remote or disadvantaged communities around Iași. Thus, starting this autumn, this laboratory on four wheels will reach 25 schools in small towns and rural areas in the Moldova region, where Fab Lab Iași mentors will hold digital production courses with an emphasis on design and 3D printing.
The first stop will take place this week at the “Grigore Moisil” Informatics High School in Iasi, where we will meet the high school students from the CyLiis robotics team. Fab Mobile represents an investment made together with the partners Fab Lab Iași, the Orange Foundation, BCR, the Money School and the “Gheorghe Asachi” Technical University Iași.
“After several years of running the Solidarity FabLab digital production courses in our coworking space, we realized that it is important to take these workshops directly to the schools around Iași, where access to digital education is more difficult. We will rely on the support of the Alumni Solidarity FabLab community to reach young people who want to deepen their knowledge in the digital world. Our goal is to popularize STEM fields in the vulnerable environments of the region as well,” declares Dan Zaharia, the founder of Fab Lab Iași.
The project received financial support from the international program Solidarity FabLab, of the Orange Foundation, in the amount of over 50,000 euros, invested in modern equipment and customized furniture for the interior of a Ford Transit Van.
“We are happy that in partnership with Fab Lab Iași we have been organizing practical courses for young people from vulnerable backgrounds for more than 3 years. We continue to focus our efforts to bring digital education to as many areas as possible in Romania. We are excited by the idea that, through Fab Mobile, we will reach those future entrepreneurs who want to discover the power of technology and digital tools that will make our future much more accessible. ” said Ovidiu Ana – Executive Director of the Orange Romania Foundation.
